Alternating occupancy in France 50,000 years ago

February 13, 2022

A remarkable paper, appearing in Science Advances last week and authored by Slimack et al., reports to phenomena: alternating occupancy of a rock shelter overlooking the wrong valley by Homo neanderthalensis and Homo sapiens, onĀ  one occasion no more than a year apart, and the second phenomenon, significantly earlier arrival of H. sapiens in Europe (between 57,050 1000 years ago). There is a report on this paper in the New York Times and the paper itself in Science Advances. The paper is well illustrated and most thorough.
